Patience
11th-14th June 2025, The Grove Theatre, Eastbourne

Our next production is to be Patience, a comic opera featuring poets, lovesick maidens and soldiers! The show centres on the love lives of several characters, with a focus on the conflict between two competing ideals: the passionate and earnest soldiers versus the pretentious and superficial aesthetes.

The title is taken from the central character, Patience, who is uninterested in love, despite being admired by the romantic Bunthorne. The other maidens have abandoned their handsome soldier suitors in favour of him, but unbeknownst to them, Bunthorne is a fraud who secretly despises poetry! The situation becomes even more complicated with the arrival of Patience’s childhood friend, Grosvenor, a perfect embodiment of the romantic ideal.
Will Patience finally fall in love? And can the disgruntled dragoons win back their ladies? Gilbert and Sullivan's witty satire serves up beautiful music and hilarious twists in their playful mockery of both romanticism and everyday life.
